Record of the Week – Purling Hiss “Lounge Lizards”

For this week, I was determined to come up with something pretty new, so I went with Lounge Lizards, the new EP from Philadelphia’s Purling Hiss. They have a few releases at this point, including a full length on Woodsist last year. I’m not exactly sure how the name Purling Hiss came to be, but I do have about five or six ideas that are probably all too logical to be right. Anyway, these guys are apparently good buddies with Kurt Vile, who seems to have become the name drop du jour lately.

As for the record, it’s pretty good. If you dig going down to your local club and banging around to lo-fi punk, then this shit is probably for you. What the nougat is to a 3 Muskateers bar is what fuzz seems to be for Purling Hiss, everything else is just built off it. Combine that with a squealing lead, vocals that are pushed down enough that it usually seems to be a sort of breathy whisper, regardless of how loud its sung, and a bunch of grunts and ooh-oohs (which are prominently used in every song – seriously) and you get Lounge Lizards, which at this point probably qualifies as one of the best noise rock albums of the year. Standout tracks include “Voices”, “Been Teased”, and of course “The Hoodoo” (ooh-ooh!). So check it out.
